The Hummingbirds

Bido Lito Sound City Review

The distinctive stylings of The Hummingbirds ensure that they have well and truly stamped their unique brand of folksy harmonica infused blues all over Liverpool. Their energy and enthusiasm in Bumper is as infectious as their uplifting vocals and equally matched by their stage presence and ability to draw in the audience.

With Bumper a cross section of the old, the young and the unusual, its evident that The Hummingbirds can unite an audience with ease. there is nothing abstract or overly complex in their lyrics, but what they touch on is personable and wholly relatable. They sing of heartbreak with the same ease as paying the bills and switch effortlessly between tempo changes. Their sound is retro with lashings of sixties leanings sewn into their lyrical seams.

Talking of Tomorrow from the same titled EP is a personal favourite and a clear crowd pleaser in Bumper, as the audience, explicity the girls, clamour to be closer to the front. Vocally driven, their five part harmonies are always pitch perfect, interwoven with charming melodies. With their new EP Doesn’t Really Matter it’s cheer that these boys have definitely taken flight.

The Anfield Wrap Ones To Watch – The Hummingbirds

The Hummingbirds are a great soundtrack to 2012 Liverpool, proud of its heritage but also very modern with a confident swagger to match. John Gibbons met up with the lads in Bier on Newington to chat about their new EP.

Hoxton Square FourOhFive Review

Liverpool Sound City (Launch) – Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, London 25/04/12

by Victoria Russell, 09 May 2012

Normally, I’m not a huge fan of Indie (good start eh!); I can easily listen to The Kaiser Chiefs, but other than that, give me growling, mechanical basslines that make you nod your head so hard you’ll be carrying it home and I’ll be overjoyed! Nevertheless, I go to every gig with an open mind and I must say, I was really very impressed with the four acts Liverpool Sound City chose to represent them.

……..

Last but not least, were The Hummingbirds. I couldn’t help but feel a great sense of warmth and affection towards the band, particularly as the ‘drummer/percussionist’ was just casually sat on a box, with a Hihat beside him! It suited their image down to a tee, as they primarily played 60s inspired Rock ‘n’ Roll, Folk and Country music (and according to their Soundcloud, ‘Nu-Skiffle’…!) The ‘front man’/ lead vocalist was hugely confident and had a lovely gravelly tone to his voice. The lyrics were cheesy, the guitar chords were the epitome of retro and the backing vocals were ‘so 60s’ it was almost like listening to The Four Tops! The vocal harmonies were perfect throughout and the guitar solos conveyed real skill. I haven’t got a bad word to say about The Hummingbirds, they were real showmen and I hope they perform as electrically at Liverpool Sound City Festival!
